Gold panning

The Lapland gold rush is still alive and kicking in Saariselkä. There is a long history of the local gold panning tradition. Huge numbers of diggers once headed north with only one thing in mind – gold. Come and experience the frenzy of the gold rush at the Saariselkä Gold Prospector Museum, which is a museum and science centre. The exhibitions at the museum take you right into a prospector's life at the diggings, and you can learn about the extraordinary life of the famous reindeer herder Sauva Aslak, who had visions of golden treasures that had many people catch gold fever and head towards the untamed waters of Lapland. Follow in the footsteps of Sauva Aslak and pan your very own speck of gold.
