The birthplace of Jean Sibelius

Hämeenlinna

The creativity and genius of Jean Sibelius, the national composer of Finland known artistically for his seven symphonies and humorously for his deeply wrinkled forehead, can still be felt today at his birthplace in Hämeenlinna. A collection of toys, photographs and furniture offer visitors a glimpse into the life of Sibelius, more commonly known as 'Little Janne'. There are also documents describing daily family life in the 1860s and various instruments which symbolise the immortality of music. Sibelius' childhood home is also occasionally used for chamber music recitals – the perfect setting to capture the aesthetic nature and atmospheric expression of classical music in an enclosed space.
