The Saraakallio rock paintings
Laukaa
Saraakallio in Laukaa is the largest rock painting in Fennoscandia, with more than 100 images. The paintings are done in red ochre, made by heating hematite-rich soil and possibly adding blood, pine resin, urea and bird eggs. The earliest paintings are approximately 6,600 years old. Forceful painting came to an end at the start of the Bronze Age, approximately in the year 1500 BCE. The most famous image in Saraakallio is perhaps the elk walking to the left, towards the setting sun.
