Punkaharju – the most beautiful piece of Finland

Formed by the latest Ice Age, the narrow Punkaharju ridge hides in the middle of the clear waters of Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland. Punkaharju belongs to the town of Savonlinna about 350 kilometres from Helsinki and 122 kilometres from Lappeenranta. The scenic area has been an internationally renowned tourist destination for over two hundred years; Russian Tsar Nikolai I fell in love with Punkaharju already in 1843 and ordered the area to be protected. Since then, the breathtaking nature of Punkaharju has remained nearly untouched to this day.
