Riisitunturi National Park - Cottages and Vacation Rentals
Voted the hiking destination of the year in 2010, Riisitunturi National Park has represented fell and hill nature at its best for 30 years already. The sides of the fell are coloured by remarkable marshes, and the top, sparse in trees, offers breathtaking views to Kitkajärvi and the forest landscapes of Posio. In winter, the trees have an imposing snow cover. There are several theories on the origins of the name Riisitunturi (Rice Fell). In old maps, the name is in the form "Riistunturi", which refers to the Sámi word "riis" meaning hay. According to another theory, the name comes from clubmoss, whose spore dust has been used to treat rickets (Finnish "riisitauti") in folk medicine.
