Jyrkkäkoski Ironworks

Sonkajärvi

These ironworks forged iron for all of Finland! Jyrkkäkoski Ironworks, located among rapids in Northern Savo, was established in 1831. Masters showed how iron was forged and taught their apprentices what hard work meant. The ironworks produced pig and bar iron as well as cast iron objects until 1919. You’ll have the chance to see old lost artisan traditions at the Ironworks Museum, which tells the history of the area and the art of iron-making. There is also a 25-kilometre long route for rafting and great places for fishing.
