Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland and the fourth largest natural freshwater lake in Europe. Saimaa is also known as Great Saimaa, as it comprises several lakes on the same level. Saimaa's magnificent islands, capes and beaches offer you unforgettable experiences. It's easy to get into the mood by renting a cottage on Saimaa. The landscapes are part of Finland's national landscape. The views vary from rocky beaches to sandy shores and from dark waters to clear blue ones. Saimaa's cottages are located near the waterways, but they also have good connections to services.
The larger cities of Joensuu, Mikkeli and Lappeenranta and the smaller towns of Imatra, Savonlinna and Varkaus are located in Greater Saimaa. Especially in the cities, there is a lot to see and do in winter or in summer. In summer, Saimaa is best experienced on a bicycle or in a boat. The Southern Karelia Recreation Area Foundation maintains marinas for travellers that are open to all, not forgetting the great fishing opportunities in Saimaa.
