Kalle Päätalo's childhood home

Taivalkoski

Kallioniemi is the childhood home of the renowned novelist Kalle Päätalo (1919–2000) in the village of Jokijärvi in Taivalkoski. Herman Päätalo, Kalle's father, bought a dairy in Mäkelä in 1922 and moved it to Kallioniemi. Kallioniemi has been renovated to resemble its past condition as accurately as possible. Museum activity in Kallioniemi started in 1991, when it was transferred to the ownership of the Kallioniemi Foundation. Kallioniemi is open in the summer, when there is also a guide present. At other times, the museum is open for visits by appointment. Kalle Päätalo is best known for the Koillismaa and Iijoki series of novels, based on his own life experiences.
